 “It Works Great and Looks Beautiful, But Just One Thing……” 2009-08-26

This is a gorgeous and well-designed fan. The manufacturer has used quality materials to achieve first-rate performance and a beautiful look. I anticipate that it will provide my family with many years of faithful service, and draw numerous compliments for its dramatic appearance. There’s just one little problem: for the first few days after installation, it SMELLS. It’s not an “electrical” or “burning wires” smell, but a smell that is vaguely reminiscent of a magic marker. After doing a bit of googling, I found that this problem is rather widespread by customers who have purchased Hunter fans over the past several years. The general consensus was that apparently during production, they use either a chemical dip or some other process which coats the fan motor and takes awhile to “burn off.” This supposedly creates the smell. I contacted Hunter Customer Service several times about this. The first rep contended that she had never heard of this particular problem, and said I could return the fan for a replacement. (It was at this point I did the googling.) I then contacted Hunter again and the second rep said he usually told customers who called with this complaint that the smell should go away “after 24-48 hours” of fan operation. I found this to be the case (although after about a week, I still smell the faintest hint of magic marker after running the fan on high only. It’s nowhere near as noticeable as when first installed). When I browsed the internet for the best deal before I made my purchase from Amazon.com, I noticed that most merchants were offering a great price–and one even had the fan marked for “clearance.” Now – after the fact – I’m wondering whether this was as a result of customer complaints about the smell. In any event – I’m keeping the fan for the reasons I mentioned in the first three sentences of this review. However, I can’t give it a 5-star recommendation.

The lights go on by itself randomly, waking my daughter up. After doing much research, we changed the code three times which involved taking the fan down. It didn’t work, cleary a defective product. We now unscrew the light bulbs, not a great solution! It is a beautiful fan, but certainly not worth the trouble. I will contact Hunter Douglas, they should recall this product!

The fan is easy to install, it was my first time doing a ceiling fan so i was pretty happy with that.

Ran into a snag after it installed. The first night we were sleeping (its in our bedroom), the lights turned on by themselves at 4am. Next night, 2am. Here’s the key: BEFORE YOU INSTALL IT – change the dipswitches fromt he default, Trim the antennae, and trim the excess power cables. This is what i did (after i installed it – i had to take it down which was not fun) – now it’s fantastic, no issues at all. It looks great too.

I was skeptical reading some of the other reviews after seeing several people complain about the fan randomly turning itself on. Fortunately, I haven’t had this problem.

This fan has been absolutely silent since day one. On low, it moves enough air to be useful but there’s no sound whatsoever. It really moves air on high, but there’s no noise from the motor (only wind noise) or any unbalancing issues to cause buzzing or wobbling. The remote is extremely convenient and the dimming feature is nice to have, too.

Overall, excellent value for the money and very well-built.

I ordered two of these fans for my bedroom. One works perfectly, the other one is possessed. The light and/or fan turn on and off at all hours of the night. We’ve tried changing the switches and still had the same problem. It’s a pain to have the lights constantly turn on several times at night when you are trying to sleep. I’ve looked at replacement remotes since replacing 2 fans would be a pain, but the reviews for the receiver/remote are not good at all with a lot of the “posessed” ceiling fan complaints. I may try a non-hunter receiver/remote to see if that helps. Otherwise I will have to return both fans since I need matching ones in my room.

Good looking fan, I have found that it is not so easy to find a silver/black fan. The normal colors seem to all be gold and wood grain. The fan is quiet and does not wobble at all, even on the highest setting. The only downsides is that this fan is not a powerful as the one it replaced. The CFM rating on the box is around 5000 cfm where as the on that it replaced was above 7000 cfm. No where on the internet i could find how powerful the fan was so i had no idea about how powerful this fan really was. Also the remote that came with the fan didn’t work but all-in-all this is a good fan for a master bedroom or smaller room.

 “nice look, but dim light, wobbles, and short mounting screws” 2009-10-08

This fan looks marvelous. But I was disappointed to find that it wobbled quite badly initially. Had to spend about an hour with the included balancing kit to reduce the wobble to an acceptable level — I ended up with weights on two different fan blades, and still there is a slight wobble. In contrast, I installed another fan by a different manufacturer the same day, and even though it came with a balancing kit too, I didn’t have to use it — that fan was completely wobble free as supplied from the factory. Also was disappointed with the very limited light output from the two light bulbs. I knew that the unit had only two light bulbs, but hadn’t realized when purchasing that the light sockets had candelabra bases, severely limiting the bulb options. I’d been planning to put two 23W compact fluorescent bulbs in there, to get about 200W equivalent output, but the highest wattage CFL I’ve been able to find in a candelabra base is 13W. (Sylvania spiral) Apparently, Hunter is guilty (along with the rest of the fan industry) of making a shameless end-run around some energy efficiency legislation. The law says that if they build the fan with standard-base sockets, then they are required to ship compact fluorescent bulbs with the fan. That of course would add to their costs, so instead they decided to change all their fans to the candelabra base, which exempts them from the requirement to ship CFL’s. So the unintended consequence of the legislation has been the production of all these crippled fans that can’t even accept the energy efficient bulbs the government wanted us to use. Shame on the legislators for not having the foresight to anticipate the manufacturer’s response, but shame on Hunter for being a part of this stupidity!!! One final gripe, that probably doesn’t apply to too many people, but the supplied 3″ mounting screws weren’t long enough to reach the holes in the mounting box in my ceiling. the mounting box was installed flush with the ceiling joist, recessed about 1/2″ from the surface of the drywall. That made the supplied screws about 1/2″ too short, so I had to make a special trip to Lowes to find some 4″ screws to finish the job. For a fraction of a cent, Hunter could have made the included screws 1/2″ longer to give the installer a bit of leeway if the mounting box isn’t flush with the ceiling.

This fan is a great value; it changed the whole look of my living room. It was relatively easy to put up, but I would recommend two people even with the hook hanging system for the motor. I put it up two weeks ago and it’s been running ever since without a single noise or wobble. The blades are dark walnut on one side and cherry on the other. It is a very high quality fan and the Scavo glass light is very nice to boot.
