What kind of cyborg would you like to become, if you could be one?
If one day people can really be cyborgs, what kind of enhancements would you like on yourself? Would you allow yourself to be turned into one in the first place?

I’d like to become a cyborg that doesn’t depend on anything (eg: battery/charge) . I want to be immune to all types of diseases / system failure / firearms (In short, indestructible) . I want to be able to teleport to anywhere at will. I want to turn invisible at will. That will be enough for me as a cyborg.

I probably wouldn’t let myself get turned into one because I’m getting a real Doctor Who vibe here and being a Cyberman is a Bad Thing.
But if it was painless and I could still keep some of my humanity then it would be okay. I’d love to have a really big memory so that I could learn heaps. I wouldn’t mind being a bit taller, either.

I’d like to have some wings attached that responds to my mind so I can just fly wherever, whenever.

Nice if the wings are also lightweight so when I decide to walk, it’s not a problem, and it’s not a strain on my bone structure. Plus, since it’s customized anyway, I’d like my wings to be pretty and sexy. Something that looks like a fashion accessories not clunky metal attachment.

If there’s ever such a PROVEN and SAFE technology, I’d be first to sign up.

I’d also like to get some implants to breathe underwater when I want to.

It would be nice to dive unhindered.

what should i do to get my crush?
its probably a bad idea that im even having a crush on her because she has a boyfriend. but her name is annie and for as long as i can remember i have had a extremely strong emotional attraction to her, we talked a little in eighth grade and now we have english together as juniors in high school but i never say anything to her its almost as if she has completely forgotten that i even exist. what do i do i wouldnt say im afraid of talking to her as much as i am afraid of her not treating me the way she did back then. she is everything i could ever want in a girl shes the most beautiful girl on earth in my eyes, when i see her in the halls at school i wonder what happened to us we used to talk a bunch back in middle school but now it seems like it was just a dream and i should just move on. believe me i have been told that in the past but it wasnt like i didnt try i wanted to leave her in the past so bad so i didnt end up following a endless trail but i never fully let her go out of my view of the perfect most amazing girl i have ever met or had the pleasure of meeting. annie i wish i could just tell you how i feel without having to worry about some guy breathing down my neck about why i spoke to you:/ (sigh) what should i do?

Who is this guy breathing down your neck, the boyfriend? He is just a boyfriend, she can speak to anyone she likes. If there is a chance to talk to her, take it. Don’t be intimidated by anyone, unless she frankly tells you to leave her alone. You can start by rekindling the old friendship. Don’t be too nervous or you’ll act goofy. Know your strenghts and work on your weaknesses. I hope this works out for you. Anyways, you’re still young, you’ll still meet a lot of girls in your lifetime. Cheer up, and get working.

I knew a Muslim couple that lived in Alaska for a while. I’m not sure what they did. Perhaps they do the same thing that people in that situation do in Ramadan which is follow the timings of the nearest Muslim country. I’m really not so sure though.
pinky pussyfooter | Jan 20, 2009

If there is a reason you can’t pray you are exempt. But I imagine they pray at a designated time the Quran says "establish regular prayers"; (morning; afternoon, evening, etc)that is parrell to when we get up. 6:00 in the morning farj ; the Quran doesn’t go into as much specifics as the hadith so I assume they make 5 at different times that relate to when the sun would be there. The Quran is a lot more lucrative because it was meant for all of mankind; the hadith are very specific.

Thank you, Pinky Pussyfooter, for giving Austin and dvswear an epistemological rap on the knuckles. Can they be any more sure that there are no muslims in Alaska than that there are no vicious, purple, invisible lions in their kitchens?!

I offer you a satirical, humorous, well-written novel [What the heck! it's a great book!] which addresses your question obliquely: extremely obliquely.

The best of many fine books by the late Canadian writer Mordecai Richler is "Solomon Gursky was Here" (1989) " Richler is considered "… the brightest light of Canadian literature [of his era]", and was considered a serious Nobel contender.

What a good question…

It makes me think about this obligatory prayer stuff…

The equatorial areas of the earth receive more sunlight than the poles…

So, what is the basis upon which you determine the appropriate prayer times when the sun does not rise at all…or when it never sets…
Natassia | Jan 20, 2009

The prayer timings in Alaska during the dark part of the year are related to the daily emergence and disappearance of aurora borealis (the northern lights), but beyond that I do not know. It would be cool to go to Alaska to find out (and to see aurora borealis).

(aurora bore alis?)
Yusef bin Muhammad | Jan 21, 2009

Wow was this a thought provoking question! Great one actually! It has caused me to ask myself some questions about the universal-ness of the Quran and the Hadiths being "very specific" as Peace wrote.
Although I studied Islam for 7 yrs before making my conversion (recently) I still find "questionable things" that challenge me to accept everything literally. (my personal shaitan won’t leave me alone I guess)

Well the solution is to still pray 5 times a day…but, the fact is, if they follow the "very specific" hadith…they wouldn’t pray until sunset and sunrise would they?? Hummmmmm You have given me something to study and ponder on.

I lived in Seattle for 2 years and in the summer the sun didn’t set until 11PM…so that means the last prayer would be at that time instead of 6:25pm "technically" following the "specific instructions" of the hadith…hummm again.

Great, great question! BTW, sorry I didn’t have an answer to your question, as it seems someone else does not how they compensate for the whole day/night thing; but I did want to make a comment. Thanks for such a good question.

Is Tea (Caffeine) diuretic in nature. Does it help in reversing water retention.?
I started drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water about 6 years back. Initially water seemed to be working as diuretic. I lost

water weight of about 7 to 8 kg from a weight of 75 to 68 kg.

Then I started gaining weight. My shoes started pinching. But I had lost about 2 inches from my waist. I has corns on

the right fingers of my feet. I gained the same weight about 7 to 8 kg so I reached about 75 again in about 2 years

time. But earlier when I had same weight my shoes were not pinching. There were other associated problems as well.

About 1 year back I cut down on my water intake to about 1 glass a day. No other liquids as well. At times I used to be

without water upto 72 hours (during this period I was not taking any other liquids as well).

My shoes stopped pinching. The corns disappeared. All other associated problems were also resolved. During last 3 months

I stopped taking tea or any other caffeine product completely.

For last 7 days I back to my water intake of 6 to 8 glasses a day.

Yesterday I decided to check the effect of drinking excess water before and after playing badminton. There was no

effect. Every thing was all right. There were no muscle cramps as well.

Today I decided to check the effect of tea. I took about 250 ml Black tea. Initially there was no effect (shoe

pinching). However by the time I finished playing (about 2 hours later) my shoes had started pinching.

It indicates that tea promotes water retention. I have been very careful to eliminate the other reasons of water

retention.

I would like to use a caution here. No one should stop drinking water as mentioned above for a long period. I have not

been drinking water with or after meals for last 2 years. I drinking water about 1 hour before meals. I have not been

taking any other liquids for last 2 years. I do not go to bed for at least 2 hours after a meal. I take my meal around 8

PM. I think these are the things which helped my to stop drinking water (substantially reduce water intake) without

effecting my kidneys. Though in past I had kidney issues. I had kidney stones for 3 years in running. Every year stones

used to reappear in summers just after rains. I have been taking tomatoes and all other prohibited things for kidney

patients for last 3 years.

That’s very interesting. When people ask me for help with water retention I always ask them to stop tea and coffee (and alcohol). All these drinks are diuretics and force the body to continue excreting water even if it is already dehydrated. Because of this they can aggravate water retention as the body then has to overproduce hormones to help the kidneys hold on to water. (Sorry it’s a bit complicated!)

The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic “John Doe” sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills — one sin at a time. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer’s terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. The seasoned and cultured Sommerset researches the Seven Deadly Sins in an effort to understand the killer’s modus operandi while green Detective Mills scoffs at his efforts to get inside the mind of a killer…

Puffy, Weepy Gerard Butler In Law Abiding Citizen Clips
05.10.09
Alright so Law Abiding Citizen looks a little bit like a low-rent version of Se7en . But it does have Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, that has to count for something doesn?t it? Or maybe not. Have you seen a Gerard Butler or Jamie Foxx movie lately? Yeah, probably not. They?ve seemed a little lost.

Maybe teaming up will get them back on track and away from playing homeless people or rom-coming with Katherine Heigl. Below we have ten clips from Law Abiding Citizen , full of intense drama, serious speeches, and a very puffy, weepy, Gerard Butler. Watch:

Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice.

Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die.

Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton?s high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. With his own family now in Shelton?s crosshairs, Nick finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.

He is now planning to kill her and is on his way home to do just that but when he gets there, she’s not there. He then receives a call from someone claiming to have kidnapped Barbara and threatening to kill her if he informs the police, which he does hoping that they do. What Stone doesn’t know is that the kidnappers, Ken and Sandy are a couple whose idea for a garment he stole and made fortune off, are not that lethal, as a matter of fact Barbara’s more lethal. And what Stone doesn’t know is that his girlfriend, Carol, has another boyfriend and they plan to blackmail Sam, by videotaping him disposing of Barbara’s body. When her boyfriend, Earl goes there to do that, the person who goes there was not Sam but a guy with a hooker, and the guy instructs the hooker to scream her head off, Earl mistakenly believes that Barbara’s not dead and that Sam was killing her there, and was so freaked out that he didn’t bother to see if it was Sam. And Carol tries to put her plan in operation by sending Sam a copy of the tape, Sam thinks that it’s for something kinky that Carol wants and when Sam tells her that he is going to do what was done on the tape to her, she assumes that he is going to kill her. So she sends another copy of the tape to the Chief of Police, and tells him that she wants him to arrest Sam for murdering Barbara, and the Chief is happy to oblige cause he is the guy who is on the tape. The Chief manages to find the instruments that Sam was going to use to kill Barbara and arrests him. Sam now has to get Barbara, alive, so that he can prove that he didn’t kill her. And Barbara starts to bond with Sandy.

Would you please tell me if you like this surprisingly hasty translation of an Italian poem?
If I believed by death I could embargo
The amorous thoughts that ballast down this girth,
Then with my hands I would have lain in earth
These noisome arms, these legs, and all their cargo;

But since from tears, I fear, the way does far go
Along in tears, and only is a birth
Into another war, I cross the firth
By halves and stay by halves, alas, nor far go.

But now the time is well to end this feint;
And ruthless cord, no more that shaft forestall
Already bathed in blood with this attaint;

I pray to Love, and do beseech that wall
That left me with her gonfalon and paint,
Who called me to her, but does not recall.

Francesco Petrarca, Canzoniere 36

Sir, if you were to hastily translate a sonnet from this section of the Canzoniere, I’d much rather it be this one as opposed to its predecessor (35), which is for me an aesthetic high point of the early sequence. That being said, I always imagined this sonnet as an epistle composed for a friend of the poet to reassure the friend that the poet has survived an illness that left him more dead than alive. Your ‘noisome arms, these legs, and all their cargo’ , which I might have alliteratively translated as ‘loathsome limbs’, describes a body (or perhaps a psyche) racked with illness. Your line 7 is one of a number of high points for me, a most poetic rendering of passing from life to death quite in keeping with the tone of the original. You have also managed to retain the balanced syntax of Petrarca’s line 8 (mezzo rimango, lasso, et mezzo il varco), a wonderfully plaintive yearning for death reminiscent of Canto 34 of Dante’s "Inferno" (I did not die, I was not living either). In line 9, the poet waits for Love to deliver the coup de grace, and the oft-cited unorthodoxy of the prayer to Love beginning in line 11 is fully credible. At the last (line 14), death has failed to take the poet away.

This was a very delightful, vivid, and direct rendering of Canzoniere 36 which seemed to lack many of the tortuous syntactic maneuvers of #34, which I have yet to analyze in full or write about at all. This however was a lighter matter entirely, albeit on a serious enough topic (!), and you have done justice to the creator’s work in your translation. I hope you eventually take a pass at #35, which is near to my heart indeed.

I know, it is rather long, but I tried to make it entertaining. Besides, it isn’t even about vampires!

I need to know if this is on a professional level, as I would like to become published someday.

———————————

Upon entering the room, he had almost forgotten the troubles pursuing him. The vast hall was unlike any of the levels he hurried past below, and unlike any that he had ever occupied in his life, for that matter. It was a Parthenon inspired design, though with a low ceiling, and bore an Olympian grace which stood proudly over the skyline of the city. In standing in its notice you could tell this wasn’t here solely for external pleasantries merely to delight the eye. Its unlimited wealth not only purchased material extravagance, but an otherworldly peace of mind and comfort for the insecurities of the soul that riches usually left callus and hollow. This was where men could ascend, freed of all their earthly problems, to sit in undisturbed reverence among themselves.

As he stood, stricken, his sense of direction and place was forgone as his eyes gazed transfixed at a point between the columns. In nature’s waning hours she gilded everything with natural luxury, and seemed to crown its head of royalty. There are, at certain rare moments, after life has lost its value and despite all its mystery’s ignored, that you experience something which imparts upon you a fleeting gift of illumination.
