The Sony VAIO S Series has a matte silver lid and chassis and a contrasting black island style keyboard

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The company, known mostly as a maker of system memory, introduced its OCZ Onyx drive on Wednesday. According to OCZ, the drive offers “reliable performance without the high price normally associated with SSD drives.” Yet the drive costs about $100 for the 32GB version. In comparison, you can get a 500GB high-speed SATA2 hard drive for about the same price.

As anybody who’s tried to charge an electronic device using a solar charger knows, it doesn’t juice up the device nearly as quickly as your typical power adapter would. However, Novothink is touting the charging case’s capability to provide up to 30 minutes of talk time on a 3G network or 60 minutes on 2G from a “mere” 30 minutes of direct sunlight. Novothink also includes a USB cable to power the Surge on cloudy or rainy days,PA3331U-1BRS, though you’ll obviously need to be near a power source–or a charged-up laptop–to recharge the unit.

How widespread is this reticence over ULV chips? I have no idea, but I do know the latest wave of laptops from Dell and HP(HP DV6000 Battery ) targeted at SMBs focused on Intel’s more powerful processors, notably the i3, i5 and i7. The processor horsepower matters to me and I’m willing to sacrifice some battery time for it. I’m not willing to sacrifice more than a pound though.

The Sony(VGP-BPL2A battery) VAIO S Series has a matte silver lid and chassis and a contrasting black island style keyboard. The palm rest has a finely textured checked pattern, which extends onto the trackpad. Depending on your perspective, the overall look is either minimalist or bland. However, the glowing green power button built into the hinge, backlit keyboard, and the thin, 1.2-inch thick design add some panache. Our only complaint is that the lid picked up some scuff marks during just a few days of testing (which included a few short trips in a bag). At 4.2 pounds, The VAIO S Series is lighter than the 13-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro, and is fairly easy to tote.

Above the keyboard is a sleek row of status lights (Bluetooth, hard-drive access, and the like), as well as touch-sensitive LEDs that let you instantly activate data backup, Wi-Fi toggle, touchpad disable, mute, and volume control. The NV7915u also comes with a good but not spectacular set of interface and media features: a DVD drive, four USB ports, HDMI- and VGA-out, an SD Card reader, and network and modem ports. Overall, the machine exhibits good craftsmanship, but it’s nothing dazzling.

The Gateway(Gateway MX3000 Battery) NV7915u has a massive chassis, and weighs a beefy 6.8 pounds. Still, the classy design offers a few nice touches. In contrast to the smudge-prone glossy finish on the outside, the keyboard and wrist rest have a subtle matte finish to minimize fingerprints.

But what about AMD? When it comes to desktop and higher end laptop chips, AMD is Intel’s biggest rival. But the company has been all-but-absent in the netbook space. Sure, there are a few relatively low power and inexpensive chips in AMD’s lineup such as the AMD Neo MV-40. But very few laptops use that chipset, and those that do tend to get horrible FPCBP101 battery life.

The Studio s15z-2249CPN definitely has a higher-end feel and look than Dell’s Inspiron line. Instead of glossy finger-print-magnet plastic, it has a matte finish with a suede texture to it, in an attractive copper brown. It has just a simple silver Dell(Latitude D620 Battery) logo in the center of the lid. A glossy black plastic surrounds the LCD and trims the keyboard, and a shiny gold-toned plastic with a subtle basket-weave pattern is used for the palm rests. Even the bottom feels like it’s made from a higher-quality material and the use of a slot-loading optical drive adds more class to the build.

Making the appointment for the training was frustrating. None of the automated phone prompts at Verizon mention the training, so you’re left guessing which number to press. These free sessions are offered at Verizon’s corporate stores, but not at their retail stores. All in all it took me about 10 minutes to reach someone to schedule my one-on-one training. When I asked to be scheduled on a weekend, they explained that the training is offered only on weekdays from 11 am to 7 pm. I let them know that’s when my daytime job takes place. After much hemming and hawing, they relented and scheduled me for 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon at their College Park, Maryland, corporate store.

A touch-sensitive strip at the top of the keyboard controls the volume and has icons for muting audio and turning on and off the Wi-Fi radio

Now consumers can find the answers they are looking for and can weight their choices respectively. This is a win-win situation for all parties involved and the new Laptop Power Adapters website is happy to be of service for both the consumer and the computer manufacturers themselves. This website is doing what the internet was designed to do by offering free reliable information to seeking individuals.

A touch-sensitive strip at the top of the keyboard controls the volume and has icons for muting audio and turning on and off the Wi-Fi radio. However, there are no other dedicated media controls. The function keys are labeled for play/pause, stop, forward, and rewind and HP(HP DV6000 Battery ) includes a small remote control that can be stowed in the laptop’s ExpressCard slot. The keyboard is reasonably comfortable for a laptop this size, though the keys feel a little mushy.

To make the Mine even more useful as a storage device, a free online account comes with it that allows you to move your stored photographs on the Terapin server, where they can reside indefinitely until you are ready to recall them. Reuters’ Bob Covington, who has been testing the unit for the past few months, says, “The Mine gives you a safety net. You can have a full record of your images without having to ever touch a computer PA3383U-1BRS . The goal is to be able to allow photographers to shoot pictures with a minimum of disruption, and take away the burdens of technology.”

BLACK Fire Energy was a company not worth knowing. But it is a different case with its reincarnation as a minerals exploration company, FPCBP101,a process that included the name change late last year to Black Fire Minerals. It has been recapitalised and sports a new board and management team, headed by geologist Simon Rigby who, up until July 2007, was exploration manager for Australia and Papua New Guinea for the mighty Barrick Gold.

A 3D accelerometer is installed to help detect excessive movement and park the hard drive heads to prevent loss of data. It’s very sensitive by default — even vigorous typing can set it off — but you can turn down the sensitivity so that the hard drive isn’t always stopping and starting.

Canon came up with a solution, first they made a voltage convertor that fits into the battery compartment, and changes the EVF voltage to match the BP HP dv3000 batteries. Ikegami, a manufacturer of broadcast cameras, and a leader in the field, made the viewfinder for them. The engineers came up with a superb 1.5-inch viewfinder, with contrast and brightness controls that stack up against the best in broadcast cameras. They put in a nifty feature, which resides just above the lens, that allows you to turn on a little light so you can see the settings.

And he addressed the ARM chip competition. Chips based on the ARM design are used in virtually every smartphone in the world and power popular phones such as the iPhone, Motorola Droid, PA3356U-1BRS,and Google Nexus One. “It’s definitely something we take seriously. It’s not something we ignore. Definitely in some of the markets they are the incumbents, like the phone,” he said. He added that Intel is putting a lot of effort into building software such as MeeGo and that software for phones is a “big deal.” He continued, saying, “I bet there’s going to be a lot of people around the world building phones (who) will be able to make use of this; most of the software work has been done for them by Intel.”

In some ways, it is a supersized version of Apple(Apple A1012 Battery)’s touch-screen iPod: same basic look and functionality with its multitouch screen and reliance on iTunes and the App Store to install applications and download media. But there are plenty of differences.

Despite germanium’s advantages, Koch agreed with Michel that years will pass before any consumer devices are made with germanium. Scientifically, however, “this is a really nice result,” said Koch.People have tried to use germanium for an infrared laser for decades without success. The fact that the MIT scientists got the laser working at all is quite impressive, said Koch.

A new contemporary keyboard gives the laptop a clean and inviting look

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

A new contemporary keyboard gives the laptop a clean and inviting look. Uniform black keys and removal of the embedded number pad also help create a modern design. The Function keys have even been re-designed so that users only need to use one finger to access multimedia functions and more. Other rarely used keys like System Request have been removed.

The ASUS UL50Vf is an unremarkable 15-inch notebook with some remarkable technology inside. Nine hours of A32-W5F battery life and the best switchable graphics solution currently on the market make this notebook a very compelling laptop. Unfortunately, the flexible plastic construction, low-resolution display, and a price tag above $800 make this a less than exciting purchase.

Nvidia has made an attempt to address laptop battery concerns by making Ion 2 more power-efficient. The platform supports new technology called Optimus, where specific tasks can be seamlessly switched between the Ion GPU and the battery-saving integrated Atom graphics chip to improve multimedia performance.

ION netbooks feature NVIDIA Optimus technology, which automatically assigns processing chores to the NVIDIA ION GPU or integrated graphics.Optimus powers down the GPU for basic tasks like web surfing, further extending battery life. When more graphics horsepower is needed for playing 3D games, running videos, or using GPU compute applications, Optimus automatically enables the ION GPU.

Intel has also made hardware improvements to make the Convertible Classmate faster and more power efficient. A new Atom processor – the Atom N450 running at 1.66GHz – increases the netbook’s FPCBP145 battery life, Kwan said. The processor is 60 percent smaller than its predecessor, and consumes 20 percent less power. Intel is offering a six-cell battery option for longer battery life.

In the case of the Gigabyte M1000, this means multiple monitor output, a battery meter and just about every connectivity port you can think of. The dock also charges the laptop. The whole bundle will cost only £239 inc VAT, and Gigabyte thinks that with full-sized PC peripherals and displays, it will replicate the performance of an entry-level Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery) desktop PC.

“Charlie’s faulty source clearly used elaborate deception to create a false account,” Cameron said. “On our numerous projects together, I have known Charlie to be a diligent and thorough researcher, who always does his best to cross-reference testimony.”

The new HP laptops and HP(HP dv8000 Battery) EliteBook ProBook Series B will be available on an optional long life battery. It guarantees three years of work, which is two times longer than lithium-ion batteries.

More than 30 products featuring the new ION GPU are expected to launch by this summer including netbooks, small form factor desktops, “barebones” systems, motherboards, and discrete add-in cards. The Acer(BATCL50L Battery) Aspire One 532G (10-inch) and ASUS 1201PN (12-inch) are expected to be the first new ION netbooks to be introduced. New all-in-one PCs powered by next-generation ION will include the ASUS EeeTop 2010PNT and Lenovo C200. Channel partners including AOpen, AsRock, Asus, Foxconn, Giada, J&W, Jetway, Pegatron, POV, Shuttle, and Zotac also plan to introduce new ION-based products soon.

According to multiple reports, Asus(Asus A42-A6 Battery) also announced an e-reader featuring a nine-inch touchscreen with 1024 x 768 resolution, WiFi, and optional 3G connectivity. It’s claimed the DR-900 (above) is no thicker than a pencil, offers 10,000 page battery life, and employs e-paper screen technology from Sipix rather than E Ink. No word on the device’s processor or operating system has surfaced, however.

Part of Acer’s plan to maintain netbook supremacy has already been enacted

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Luxury is one aspect that Asus seems to be throwing in while designing the EeePC 1018P. Slimmer than the other the two, the 1018P would have a trendy keyboard, better touchpad and a smooth fingerprint reader. It would also come boasting of a USB 3.0.

The 802.11b/g/n wireless card inside the EC14D07u delivered impressive data rates at both 15 feet (32.8 Mbps) and 50 feet (26.9 Mbps) from our test router. These numbers are well above the category average of 20.8 and 17.3 Mbps, respectively. Gateway(SQU-415 battery) does not include Bluetooth connectivity with this notebook.

The 17in screen of the CR620 laptop has a native resolution of 1600×900 and it’s almost perfect for lining up program windows side by side using Windows 7’s Aero Snap feature (some Web pages might require horizontal scrolling if lined up side by side in this way). The screen provides decent brightness and contrast, but it has a glossy finish, which can cause reflections from overhead lights which can be annoying.

If the meeting this year is like those in the past, Apple(Apple A1012 Battery) shareholders may not budge on issuing a formal report like some of these groups want. But it doesn’t mean their clamoring isn’t having any impact. After all, the constant badgering of these groups likely had something to do with Apple’s move to update its Web site to be more open about the company’s impact on the environment.

A suburban Philadelphia school district remotely activates the cameras in school-provided laptops to spy on students in their homes, a lawsuit filed in federal court Tuesday alleged.According to the lawsuit filed by a high school student and his parents, the Lower Merion School District of Ardmore, Pa. has spied on students and families by “indiscriminate use of and ability to remotely activate the Webcams incorporated into each laptop issued to students by the School District.”

Part of Acer(BATBL50L6 Battery)’s plan to maintain netbook supremacy has already been enacted, with the PC maker being the first to introduce a netbook based on the NVIDIA ION 2 mobile platform. The company also plans to devise products running the upcoming Google Chrome OS. These laptops are slated for launch sometime around the middle of the ongoing year and Acer hopes to ship about one million during the first year.

The architecture integrates a graphics processor and memory controller inside the Atom chip, which allows for faster system and graphics performance than its predecessor. Intel has claimed that the integrated graphics processor could smoothly play back 720p high-definition video.

Since the early days of the Mini 2133 HP(HP dv9000 Battery) has used a flush matte keyboard on its netbooks, but the Mini 210 changes things up with a chiclet keyboard. Our fingers didn’t want to part with the soft touch of the black matte keys, and the make of the entire panel feels firmer than that on the ASUS Eee PCs or even the Toshiba Mini NB305.

Accessory makers are hoping the iPad will help that market grow further. The device, which will come in models priced between $499 and $829, has a 9.7-inch screen, no keyboard, and a wireless Internet hookup. It is geared for navigating the Web, reading electronic books and running applications that are created by others.

At 3kg it’s not exactly an ultraportable, but it is about half the weight of Alienware’s thigh-crushing 6kg M17x gaming laptop. It feels like a good sturdy weight at least. One inspired design feature of the G51J is having the motherboard mounted to the bottom of the keyboard-tray,PA3465U-1BRS, rather than the bottom of the case itself, meaning the bottom of the laptop doesn’t get hot during usage.

Gamers, however, should consider another system. At low resolutions (and expectations), we wrung out just enough speed to play Left 4 Dead 2, but nearly every other recent game was too demanding; as noted, this Aspire(Aspire 3100 Battery) lacks a dedicated graphics processor. At least you can fill dull moments in the college dorm or between business meetings with casual, untaxing games.

What you won’t find is an optical drive: to keep the weight and thickness down, any optical drives have to be external

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Enough with bickering cell phone technologies, messaging systems that won’t talk, incompatible file formats, and TV remotes that spread like kudzu across your coffee table. We’ve been dealing with some of these problems for more than a decade, and it’s time for things to improve.

The steady march of rumors about updated MacBook laptops is getting louder, with recent noise about new Intel Core i5 and i7 processors now joined by hints of Nvidia’s new Optimus switchable graphics technology. The MacBook(MacBook Pro 17″ Batteries) Pro line hasn’t been updated since June 2009, and could certainly use a refresh to keep up with the latest laptop technology.

The web-like Nanonets developed in the lab of Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dunwei Wang offer a unique structural strength, more surface area and greater conductivity, which produced a charge/re-charge rate five to 10 times greater than typical Lithium-ion anode material, a common component in batteries for a range of consumer electronics, according to findings published in the current online edition of the American Chemical Society journal Nano Letters.

We were impressed by the bright 13.3-inch, 1366 x 768-pixel resolution screen, even while surfing unplugged; YouTube clips at full screen looked sharp. Viewing angles are wide, but the glossy display did kick back a number of reflections,PA3399U-1BRS, especially during dark scenes. We were less impressed by the speakers. When listening to Curtis Mayfield’s “Think (Instrumental),” we kept wishing for greater volume and extra bass.

“The OpenTablet is the ultimate control panel, delivering the most commonly accessed multi-media services right to your fingertips anywhere,” stated Dan Gittleman, CEO of OpenPeak. “The all-in-one device allows you to sync schedules, check movie times, listen to music, watch videos, get weather updates, and even monitor energy usage and home security, all from a single, easy-to-use device.”

Wave provides software to help solve critical enterprise PC security challenges such as strong authentication, data protection, network access control and the management of these enterprise functions. Wave is a pioneer in hardware-based PC security and a founding member of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG),FPCBP101, a consortium of more than 100 companies that forged open standards for hardware security. Wave’s EMBASSY® line of client- and server-side software leverages and manages the security functions of the TCG’s industry standard hardware security chip, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and supports the TCG’s “Opal” self-encrypting drive standard.

A source in the airline and carrier industry, who asked not to be named, agreed. “The DOT has significantly underestimated the number of packages that would be affected, and the costs that would be incurred by consumers and industries.”

What you won’t find is an optical drive: to keep the weight and thickness down, any optical drives have to be external. Although entirely expected, we’re slightly disappointed that HP(HP NC2400 Battery) doesn’t pack one in the box.

As we discovered in our 1005PE review, you’ll just about be able to play back high definition 720p video on this specification, but forget about gaming or anything else remotely demanding. Of course, everyday applications will run just fine, held back mainly by the limited screen real estate.

Next are plans to build Powermats for charging the infamously fiddling laptop batteries in professional DSLRs and camcorders, while most ambitious of all is the moveto integrate Powermat technology directly into home and office surfaces so laptops or kitchen appliances could simply be moved onto a Powermat ‘ring’ and immediately that working/charging. No timescale was put on this particular breakthrough (which was also extended to walls for hanging lights or powering TVs cable free), but I’d like to see it ASAP.

The HP Pavilion MS214 is an attractive all-in-one desktop

Monday, February 8th, 2010

With Apple’s decision to go with the iPhone operating system, instead of Mac OS X or a hybrid, the company seems even more intent on using it as a major platform for mobile development. Apple(Apple 661-2569 Battery) has outpaced rivals in the mobile application market with more than 140,000 apps, but it has faced increasing competition from Google’s Android, which is also being pitched as a tablet operating system.

The HP(HP dv8000 Battery) Pavilion MS214 is an attractive all-in-one desktop. The display has a glossy black border while the base is a metallic silver color. The computer measures just over 2 inches deep, although the base takes up about 8 inches.

I also ran another video transcoding test using MediaCoder, which has a CUDA encoder for H.264 videos. In other words, while the test in the previous section shows how long it takes to transcode a video from an uncompressed AVI file to an Xvid file using an application that relies solely on the CPU, this test shows how much faster a similar job goes when using a GPU accelerated encoder.

The keyboard on the HP Mini 311 is almost identical to that on the smaller HP(HP NC4400 Battery) Mini 110. The only real difference is that the edges have been rounded to give the keyboard an interesting visual effect.

The new Intel Keyboard-Video-Mouse Remote Control (KVM Remote Control), features available with dual-core Intel Core i5 and i7 vPro processors work in conjunction with Intel(R) integrated graphics, bringing a stop to IT administrators’ frustration with having to ask users, “What do you see?” Instead, they will see users’ displays just as the users do and have full control of the PC, even if the operating system is inoperative. Previously, KVM functionality required appliances that cost as much as $200 and more per PC.

The Wind U160 uses the Intel Pine Trail platform, with the new-generation, single-chip architecture Intel Atom N450 processor. With very low power consumption of just 5.5 watts, this processor supports extra-long laptop battery run-time, while also providing outstanding display performance.

Equipped with entertainment essential including a 16:9 aspect ratio panel, DVD burner/player, HDMI port on select models, users can easily display multimedia presentations at the office or watch movies at home. This laptop offers constant connectivity with WiFi, Ethernet and optional Bluetooth. It also comes with VeriFace technology and built-in cameras.

The dedicated scroll region unfortunately limits the area available for regular movements even further. Implementing a two finger scroll could potentially have saved some space. The left and right-click keys were thankfully the best part of the touchpad area. They offer a nice quick click for feedback when pressed. Both the keys are large enough for regular use and are easily accessible. Lenovo(ThinkPad Z60T Battery) should have allocated more space for the touchpad as they have with the new IdeaPad S10-3.

The rule changes would also require electronics goods to be carried in cargo sections that either have fire suppression systems, or are accessible by the pilots in case of a fire. Kerchner said that is impractical and would lead to, in many cases, electronics goods piled right behind the cockpit.

Finally, the keys just don’t feel as snappy and responsive as I’ve come to expect from a keyboard. Laptop Magazine describes the U150 keyboard as “mushy,” and I have a hard time coming up with a better word than that. I described the keys as “cheap” feeling in my unboxing video,FPCBP105, and several readers took issue with that characterization. And cheap’s probably not the right word. I’m sure the plastic in these keys costs just as much as that in most other low cost notebook keyboards. But I generally didn’t find typing on the Lenovo IdeaPad U150 to be all that pleasant. The keyboard is also a little on the noisy side.

If you’re traveling within the U.S., you may be able to connect to the Internet through your cell phone provider’s network

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Although it’s not really an entertainment-tuned laptop, the HP Pavilion dm3 manages to pull off a rather good audio-visual experience–courtesy its LED-backlit widescreen and better-than-average onboard speakers. The included six-cell HP dv3000 battery lasted 1 hour 43 minutes in our battery tests, at high performance preset and full-screen brightness; expect just over 3 hours of surfing the Web over Wi-Fi on a single charge at power-safe.

As for raw computing power, the E4300’s got guts. Our review unit came with an Intel Core Duo P9400 processor running at 2.4GHz, backed by 3GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory and Windows Vista Home Basic (you can opt for other OSs; prices for the system start at $1299, as of February 3, 2010). The E4300 posted a solid WorldBench 6 score of 98, easily landing in the front half among the all-purpose laptops we’ve recently reviewed.

On the other hand, don’t count on the Intel 4500MHD graphics chipset to take you far on most games–it just isn’t robust enough. Travelers will appreciate the Inspiron 6400 battery ’s longevity: In our tests, the E4300 managed to last for 5 hours, 27 minutes with its upgraded six-cell lithium ion battery. Keep in mind that the larger battery sticks out from the back of the chassis, adding extra bulk; fortunately, the arrangement isn’t as awkward as that on some other laptops with beefed-up batteries.

As far as hardware was concerned, the feature that was ranked the highest by 60% of all owners was the wireless connectivity, while touch input held the second place with 23%. Still, e-reader owners did say that they would like to see certain improvements, such as a longer laptop battery life (39%) and color screens (34%).

The 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM and 250GB hard disk is a less generous specification than average among the 17in laptops. Its score of 189 overall in our Windows benchmarks means there’s not much software this laptop can’t handle, but it’s nothing to get excited about.

Although glossy lids and black-and-silver colour schemes have been done many times before, the sporty curves and smattering of blue LEDs bring it up to date. The connection options are disappointing, though, with just three USB2 ports, no FireWire and basic wireless networking without Draft-N support.

While Toshiba(Satellite A300 Battery )’s 17in P300 caters for people who want lots of everything, the Satellite Pro A300-1C1 is clearly aimed at more frugal shoppers. There’s nothing cheap-looking about the chassis. The rounded edges give it a friendly charm, though, and it feels tough. The keyboard sags a little under pressure, however, and the skinny Enter key may annoy touch typists.

The 15.4in screen’s 1,280×800 resolution is typical at this price and size, and we have no serious issues with its image quality, although its blacks weren’t quite as dark as on some of the other laptops. The touch pad is small but works well, FPCBP105,and the keyboard has a good layout and is comfortable to use. The speakers sound awful, though. The base of the laptop becomes fairly hot and the fan gets quite loud during intensive tasks, but neither is worryingly bad.

Having access to 3D movies and other content is critical, especially to non-gamers. You can download some of this 3D fare now, but not a lot is available. While 3D Blu-ray movies are on the way, you’ll need new software to play them, and neither laptop has a Blu-ray player. Meanwhile, there are industry efforts to stream 3D videos. And Fujifilm is selling a 3D-capable digital camera for consumers.

I began the return process shortly before midnight on January 19.   The “request for firmware upgrade” form required me to enter my name and address, home and daytime phone numbers and select a time they could call me if they needed, an email address, PA3444U-1BRS,and the serial number of my 500 reader.  They also cautioned me to backup my reader content; I decided I’d erase everything from the reader.  Once the form was completed, I continued to a page where I was told to print out two copies of the return form – one to keep and one to include with the reader.

Contributing to the industry-leading speed and energy efficiency of the processors, Intel Hyper-Threading Technology interconnects multiple processor cores with multiple “threads” that enable faster processing of instructions in parallel.

If you’re traveling within the U.S., you may be able to connect to the Internet through your cell phone provider’s network — you just slide a mobile broadband card into your laptop PA3451U-1BRS and then you can surf the Web from anywhere your cell phone provider has service. There’s usually a monthly charge, and you’ll have to purchase the card from your cell phone provider. Plans are available from most major cell phone providers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Computing on-the-go couldn’t be easier with the bevvy of smart phones, laptops and netbooks on the market

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Normally, we’d be lucky if products made it to retail shelves within a week after being announced. But in a strange twist of events, Sony(PCGA-BP71 battery)’s latest machines have not only appeared online ahead of the local launch, they are already being sold in some brick-and-mortar stores.

The Core i3, i5, and i7 processors are slated to replace most of Intel’s older generation of Core 2 processors across its mobile, desktop, and server lines. At the Consumer Electronics Show last month, Intel introduced mainstream mobile processors based on the Core i design–the Core i3 and i5.

Computing on-the-go couldn’t be easier with the bevvy of smart phones, laptops and netbooks on the market. But printing documents while away from the home or office is a whole ‘nother story — until now. PlanOn’s Printstik PS905ME printer provides completely portable printing power. The lightweight, mobile printer utilizes rechargeable laptop batteries and thermal printing technology so folks can print documents without needing outlets or wasteful ink cartridges.

Keeping the same look and feel as the recent 17-inch M17x version, the Alienware M15x is an imposing black slab of computing power that’s thicker and heavier than most 17-inch laptops.

So it’s been a long day, you plop down on the couch, turn on the TV and grab your laptop and a cold beverage. But while you’re watching that re-run of The Office on TBS you come across an awesome video on the web – probably the Engadget Show – and instead of watching that expensive 40-inch HDTV you end up staring at the smaller screen. Okay, so maybe that’s our specific scenario, but you’d probably hook up your laptop to a TV in a number of different situations if it didn’t involve cables, dongles, and extra software — basically if it were just easier. Well, it’s supposed to be with the $999 Toshiba(Satellite M100 Battery ) Satellite E205 and its included Netgear Push2TV adapter.

And the Asus(Eee PC 1000 Battery ) UX30-QX011C’s upmarket appearance is matched by punchy performance, 4GB RAM helping it to a WorldBench 6 score of 72. Not bad for a PC this portable, and certainly fast enough to handle everyday tasks: even with Windows Vista on board. Battery life is pretty healthy too, the UX30 having sufficient stamina to last for almost five-and-a-half hours in our real-world Mobile Mark test.

Unfortunately, the names and descriptions for these mobile computing devices have become somewhat interchangeable, generating a fair amount of consumer confusion. In terms of buzz, notebooks are yesterday’s news. Last year the Next Big Thing was the netbook; this year it’s the smartbook. What’s the difference?

This looks like the future of netbooks. The Alienware M11x rocks a solid 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo processor with an NVIDIA GT335M and 1GB of RAM, weighing all of 4 pounds. It is passably a netbook because of its 11.6-inch screen and $799 pricing. It also gives you 6.5 hours of laptop battery life at a full charge. For Alienware, that is netbook cheap, but with processing power unlike any other netbook in the market, a.k.a. the first gaming netbook. There’s WiFi a/b/g/n and 3G. Oh, it has a backlit keyboard, too, which I’ve been looking for in a cheap laptop and has never found until now.

Sure, I love covering robots here on Coolest Gadgets, and this particular one from Fujisoft is the Palro. I can only assume that this is some sort of blend of the words “Pal” and “Robot”. However, I would rather it have been called “RoPal”, doesn’t that sound so much cuter?

MiserWare Inc. of Blacksburg, Va., founded by Kirk Cameron and Joseph Turner in 2007 to commercialize energy-saving technologies developed at Virginia Tech for PCs, laptops,PA3535U-1BRS, and servers, is giving away software.

As a frequent traveler, I am always looking for ways to shave some pounds off the gear I am carrying, without sacrificing convenience or performance. That’s the reason why I recently switched from a MacBook Pro 13” to a MacBook Air. But with the iPad around the corner, I am starting to reconsider my options. Granted, the iPad cannot replace a laptop, but what about pairing it with a super lightweight netbook like the Sony(VGP-BPS2C/S battery) VAIO X? At just 3.1 pounds, the combination would only be 0.1 pounds heavier than a MacBook Air, would roughly cost the same amount of money, and would give me a lot more bang for the bucks.

In latest products, Apple has phased out the use of PVC plastic and hazardous brominated flame retardants

The X83’s build is for the most part quite stable and well-thought out. It’s actually one of the more solid ASUS units I’ve held, and the hinge problem I’ve seen consistently with older ASUS(Eee PC 1000 Battery ) machines is for the most part ancient history. I still would like them to be a bit firmer, though; I shouldn’t be able to pick up the unit and shake the lid all the way open.

HD movies looked great on the L500’s screen, which is bright and colourful. The backlight had a distinct dark patch in the lower-middle portion of the screen, while the screen’s glossy finish makes it hard to avoid reflections in brightly-lit rooms.

The Dell(Dell Precision M6400 battery) Precision M6500 comes with a few processor offerings. The version we examined was driven by the most powerful CPU offering: a quad-core Intel Core i7 (Nehalem) x920 processor running at 2GHz. This is one of the first Nehalem mobile processors to ship. It supports Hyper-Threading, so it provides up to eight execution pipelines. These are fed by an 8MB cache that in turn can be fed by up to 16GB of DDR3 memory running at 1,333MHz. On my machine, the system had 4GB of RAM.

Who makes the box? Apple has caught heat from watchdog groups in the past, but its current products are state of the art, when it comes to energy efficiency and materials. In its latest products, Apple(A1175 Battery) has phased out the use of PVC plastic and hazardous brominated flame retardants, so it would be surprising if it didn’t continue this policy with new hardware.

These have soared in popularity, primarily because of the success of the Sony e-Reader and the Amazon Kindle. Both use digital ink, have long VGP-BPS2C/S battery life and the latter connects by itself to the internet via the mobile phone network.

Ergonomic features of the mobile computer include an updated trackpad, a smudge-resistant shell and a chiclet keyboard. The product may come in several colors, with a choice between ruby red, sapphire blue, silver and charcoal black. The device uses a film-printed shiny coating.

The X2390 also has an on-screen soft keyboardand an optional 3 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus and exposure. It is packaged in a slim and durable casing measuring 196mm(h) x 256mm(w) x 32mm(d) and. It is also extremely lightweight weighing just 1.1kg including an extended life laptop battery pack that provides 6-7 hours operation, with optional external snap-on batteries that can extend its use indefinitely, depending on the applications in use.

One of the patent’s diagrams contains several drawings and a series of steps that show a finger entering the “proximity sensing field” over a specific feature (like a button) on the UI, displayed on a a tablet-like device’s screen. The system then displays and enables a “particular GUI element,” such as a virtual keyboard. After typing, the fingers move away from the screen, and the system disables the object and removes it from the screen.

This is where the device really shines. Photo albums can easily be expanded to scan for the photo you are looking for. Photos are also viewable by location where they were taken. It’s extremely quick to jump back and forth. One nice feature, Origami, automatically creates collages of multiple photos in each slide.

The iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and, to a lesser extent,PA3506U-1BRS, Windows Mobile platforms have formalized the notion of a modern smartphone—that is, a device that supports a useful and growing collection of native applications. A large portion of the general public has seen the future of these devices and found it enchanting. And for an even larger population in third-world countries and up-and-coming markets, these devices simply are mainstream computing already. They’ll never own or need a traditional PC at all.

ASUS is reported to be on its way towards launching another ION 2 PC, this time a netbook

Inter-VM, or kernel-based firewalls, are an example of an approach to correct this problem, said Tim Le Master, director of systems engineering at Juniper Networks. “I think there will be a lot of interest in it because of all of the interest in securing the data center in general and in cloud computing,” Le Master said.

Our testing experience with netbooks has always been so encouraging for everyday activities like surfing that we have had to push the limit with things like games and HD video to find out what the potent little Atom couldn’t do. With the Sony(PCGA-BP71A batteries) Vaio P, the challenge was just the opposite: finding a single ordinary task that this computer could do properly. Connect to Wi-Fi? Not without diving through Sony’s slow-loading and clumsy connections interface, which will prevent you from using Vista’s own perfectly usable one. Play YouTube? Barely, and don’t even think about high quality or full-screen. Play Flash games? Not at all.

The Aspire AS5740-6378 runs on a 2.27GHz, Intel Core i5-430M processor, which performed superbly on all of my speed tests. Compared with the Acer(BTP-42C1 Battery ) Aspire 5738DG-6165, which uses an Intel Core 2 Duo T6600, the AS5740-6378 bested it in video encoding and Cinebench R10 tests by 25% and 49%, respectively. The AS5740-6378 dominated the Dell 1555 and Sony NW270FS by an even greater margin in these tests.

A VGA connector allows you to plug in an external display. Using Intel’s software, you can then either clone the netbook’s display (show the same desktop on both screens) or extend your Windows desktop to a second monitor (designate the second monitor as your primary display and you can drive it at its native resolution). The machine is also outfitted with three USB 2.0 ports and a four-in-one media-card reader that supports SD, MMC, Memory Stick, and Memory Stick Pro media.

As in the original Vaio W we reviewed, the 10.1-inch wide-screen LED display has a 1,366×768 native resolution, which is a welcome and rare improvement on the Netbook standard of 1,024×600. We’re more used to seeing higher-res screens on 11.6-inch and larger Netbooks,PA3420U-1BRS, and this remains one of the few that offers this fine a resolution on a 10.1-inch display. While we were initially concerned about text and icons getting too small for comfort, the bright and crisp display actually looks great and not too small at all. We might gripe a little that Sony could also add an 11-inch model, as many other Netbook makers have done, but having the HD option on a 10-inch screen is the next best thing.

Your cell phone can even help with this, thanks to Bluetooth. Get the Nio from TenBu Technologies. The electronic fob looks a lot like the remote control for the power locks on many cars. You pair this with your cell phone, and then attach it to your keys or briefcase or whatever. If the two get separated by a certain distance, both the phone and the Nio fob will sound an alarm. (If you have more than one Nio, each can be set to make a different sound.)

Mbakwe has been on the bench all season while the case for a felony aggravated FPCBP176 battery charge against him goes through the legal process. Mbakwe insists it’s a case of mistaken identity, but Smith and Maturi have agreed to keep him suspended while the case is still open.

Once the pack is in the car, a laptop battery management system (BMS) is used to coordinate performance with energy supply and to potentially relay that information outside the vehicle. We know that General Motors plans to use OnStar with the Chevrolet Volt. EnerDel discusses the pack’s communication ability with each automaker that it deals with individually, so there’s no standard way that every pack tells every vehicle (or the OEM, or EnerDel) how it’s being used.

The problem is, this deception has totally changed the game for people who write about consumer tech. There’s no doubt at all that we, the overworked members of the tech-reviewers’ union, have always accepted manufacturers’ benchmarks as accurate. In the Nook’s case, for example, every single major reviewer—Wall Street Journal, USA Today, PC World, CNET, Engadget—wound up parroting the company’s weight claim. Including me.

Most impressive, though, was the Samsung(Samsung Laptop Batteries) X120’s resolve in the face of high-definition video. Intel’s GMA 4500MHD graphics chip may crumple under game load, but this GPU also takes over video playback duties in certain Windows programs, including Windows Media Player. Thus the CPU will read no load, even when playing 720/1080p HD video.

NVIDIA has been hard at work developing the ION 2 mobile platform and hardware makers are already being revealed as hard at work implementing the new chipset. The upcoming platform has been described as superior in performance and features to the Pine Trail. Acer was implied to be working on systems based on the ION 2 as early as December and now it seems that ASUS(Eee PC 1000 Battery ) is also ready to adopt the new platform. After a rumor about upcoming ION 2-based nettops reached the web, ASUS is reported to be on its way towards launching another ION 2 PC, this time a netbook.
