“Black and Decker Toaster Oven -TRO962″ 2009-05-17
By D@Boise (Boise, ID)
I love this oven and have been looking for one for about 3 months locally. No one carries it. All are dial or digital now. And huge. I love this one because of the toast button. I use it for baking and heating. I have a great microwave but often prefer the conventional heat this oven affords without heating the full oven for a quick meal. The toaster has worked great for me from the beginning and started to take longer to toast and then the toaster part burned out. I have had no problem cleaning it with a little SOS pad and it looks great and doesn;t take much room on my counter top. I have owned this toaster oven for 6 years and just recently the toaster option burned out but the oven still works. I broil my toast and turn it over for the other side. I do wish it had sound to indicate the toast was done. I tried the dial toaster oven and hated it. Returned it for a 93.00 credit. Love the option to push the button to toast and choose the setting you want for browning of the toast. Have had problems too with getting busy and not realizing it was finished and the toast gets hard and cold before I get to it. But could live with that if I could get another one like it. If I can’t find another one I will have this one fixed. Overall, I love it!!!!!

“Model number confusion” 2009-01-05
By Charles M. Norcutt (Endwell, NY)
Since I don’t own this product yet this is not a negative or positive review but instead is an answer to some reviewers here who insist that this model has a bell which rings when the toast is done while others say it does not. The reason for the confusion is confusion over model numbers. TRO962 has an electronic timer for toast timing and does not have a bell. TRO964 has a mechanical timer for toast timing and does have a bell. The two models are otherwise very similar. I found this out by going to Sears which claimed to have the TRO962 (and so the sign said on the floor display along with “electronic control” on the features list) but examining the floor stock showed the model number to be TRO964 with the now ubiquitous mechanical bell timer (which I do not want) I’m afraid the TRO962 has been discontinued and I’m in search of one.

“Never Thought a Toaster Could Be This Bad” 2008-11-10
By Bellaneph (FL)
I saw this toaster on sale at Kohl’s 2 day sale for $20 less than the usual price. It was selling for $29.99 as opposed to the usual $49.99, so I thought I was getting a good deal. I didn’t read the reviews on it, because I figured “how bad could a toaster be?” For $30, I was sure it was worth it. Well, I was surprised to discover it was pretty bad. I read some of the reviews when I got home and thought maybe the people had been exaggerating, but when I opened the box, the first thing I noticed was the door wouldn’t open correctly. It would actually jam as you tried to open it and then you would have to place your hand on the top of the toaster to pull on the door to unjam it. I never even got as far as to plug it in, but if there’s even some truth in these other reviews on this toaster, the entire top of the toaster would be extremely hot. Meaning, that if you placed your hand on top to get some pressure going to pull open the stuck door, you’d burn your hand off. I figured it wasn’t worth burning myself over, so I didn’t even bother to try to open the door with the toaster on.

In addition, the platform at the bottom of the toaster was bent, making it easy for the crumbs to fall out of the toaster on to the counter. I don’t know if this was a flaw in my toaster or part of the actual design, but it was ridiculous to have the bottom of the toaster bend like that.

I immediately put it back in the box and returned it today. Thing was a piece of junk.

It seems that once it reaches a certain temperature, it just shuts off the heating elements. It doesn’t matter whether the item is toasted or not. Sometimes, it turns back on in mid stride. Either this is a think-of-the-children type of safety feature or a defect. Regardless, it is going back to the store.

Equipped with electronic controls, the oven sounds a signal bell when cooking is complete. The thermostat offers adjustable cooking temperatures from 200 degrees F to 500 degrees F, and the toast control has three browning settings.
“A big step forward” 2005-08-26
By SergioPi (Houston, Texas – USA)
I can’t praise this product enough. Buy it! It’s a big step forward for Black&Decker. I have never cooked anything better than a sausage in my entire life, and now I am cooking just about anything from beef and fish to bread and toasts. What makes this possible? The ease of switching between bake and broil, the precise temperature control that bakes food very fast without overheating, the design of the broil coils that brown without burning. The overall design is very simple and at first sight the oven doesn’t look capable of doing all that, but it is! The size is small yet roomy inside, ideal for cooking a meal for two in a blink. It uses very little energy and generates very little heat (but don’t touch it and keep children away). I installed it myself hanging under a cabinet using a Black&Decker mounting hood, it looks inconspicuous,

as it should. Ideal, I love it.

Nothing is perfect in this life. The mechanism that extracts the rack is too weak and is already damaged. The mounting hood is sold separately, it should be an option so that people can buy an “under-the-cabinet” toaster oven. There are no instructions on how to clean the inside of the oven. The casserole/cake pan in the enclosed offer is 11.13″ wide, but the inside of the oven is only 11.0″ wide, so the pan would not fit (I noticed this and didn’t buy the offer), and there is no explanation provided. Nothing too serious in muy judgement, the oven is still a very good buy.

By the way, the hood fits very well! Hope the oven keeps going.

The bake and broil options quit working today, yet the toast option still works!?!?? Anyhow, don’t know if I just got a *lemon,* or maybe all of the Black & Decker toaster ovens are bad. Either way, I won’t purchase another Black & Decker small appliance again. The front opening tray is a change they should have made a long, long time ago. I’ll have to admit, before this, my tray was pretty nasty looking. Now I can clean it all the time. I will! Really!

On the minus side, I can’t get used to pushing a button to make toast instead of flipping a lever, but I suppose I’ll get over it. This is my fifth toaster oven, and except for the inconvenient toast button and the convenient crumb tray, it isn’t very different from the first one. However there is another difference. The hanging bracket that fit the last few models won’t work with this one, so It has to take up counter space. That’s disappointing, but not earth shattering. What really ticks me off is that they don’t tell you that BEFORE you buy the thing.

I suspect this won’t be my last Toaster Oven, but I hope they’re through making changes.

The oven temp. appears to work fine, however, even at the darkest setting, you must toast a piece of bread twice! Unfortunately, since we received this as a gift and did not start using it right away, it is no longer under warranty and we are stuck with it. If it had still been under warranty, you would have to pay them $5 to ship you a new one. Since their product is defective, I would expect them to pay for the shipping to replace it.

I love it. I can make pizza or 8 mini bagels or 6 slices of toast at one time. It bakes great. Is easy to clean. It preheats and buzzes when the itme is finished toasting or baking. This was one great Christmas gift.

“A joke” 2006-07-16
By themblues (CA)
This “oven” is a joke. Along with the other reviewers I have all the same complaints. Not insulating the walls of a $100 unit is a joke. The buttons are so hard to push I actually have to put the back against the wall as the only way to keep it from sliding back when I press them. No stop on the slide out rack? Would have taken 5 WHOLE minutes to borrow that design from a regular oven. One reviewer stated this unit recalls “last use” info. This would be great, but it’s not on mine. No changing the timer after you press start, so you have to reprogram everything AGAIN if you want to change it. The thing that frustrates me most about this unit is the cooking timer starts directly after the 10 minute warm up period. So that if you are not in the room, you lose that cooking time forcing you reprogram. This is stupid because you A) haven’t put the food in yet and B) you have to press start every time you open and close the door anyway. The convection works okay (other than burning food on the side closest to the fan) But they don’t tell you you have to cut stated cooking times by about 1/3.

This is just a slapped together unit buyers as the testers instead of any real R&D.

“Ugh” 2006-06-02
By Christine M. Dohm (North Carolina, United States)
I have been buying Black & Decker toaster ovens for years. This one seemed to be the ultimate — digital, convection option, large capacity, black to match my kitchen. I use my toaster oven as a true second oven and really wanted something nice.

It’s a very expensive piece of junk, basically.

1. If you pull out the rack more than 1/3 of the way, it falls forward. Fun.

2. You can’t set the temperature above 400 degrees. French fries and most frozen meals expect at least 425.

3. I have yet to use the convection feature without burning my food to a crisp. There is some secret to using the convection that I am not aware of.

4. To push any of the buttons, you have to hold the other side of the oven so it won’t move. I plan to look for something heat-proof and slide-proof that I can put under the oven to prevent this, as it’s a real hassle when the oven is hot.

There are some good points, but to be honest I have no desire to list them, given how negative the bad points are to me.

As I paid a considerable amount of money for this, I feel obligated to stick with it until it dies. Thanks, Black & Decker.

Burners boiled water and made hamburger helper real well, but had to have both on to be able to use the larger burner at maximum heat. If you don’t mind waiting for something to bake and boil, it’s ok, but I think there might be better alternatives out there.

Thus, the oven doesn’t turn itself off, which means it burns everything. And, like the other posters, I’d previously owned B&D toasters for periods of years with no problem. I guess it’s time to upgrade. It’s not worth the trouble fighting with them over the warranty, let alone digging the box out of the bottom of my storage closet.

“Cheap, you can do better” 2009-01-05
By Joe Wasik (Dublin, CA USA)
This toaster broke one month after warranty expired. Came home one day and my 16 year old son said he tried to use it but couldn’t figure out how. Probably because timer is a clumsy dial and not very intuitive. Now it turns on and off only. Light is always on. Smells like burning rubber. It has a peculiar hooking thingy that pulls out the tray when you open the door. Great when it works, but somehow it gets in the way more than it helps. I wound up bending them so that they stayed out of the way. I’m going to buy another cheap oven because I like them small like this one. But no more Black and Decker.

“Disappointing…” 2008-11-18
By Cari (New Hampshire)
I purchased this toaster oven after having had a Black and Decker toaster that lasted for more than 15 years. The timer was hard for the kids to set, but the real disappointment is how poor quality it is. I had this one for less than 6 months and this week noticed a funny smell when using, now it doesn’t work at all. Very disappointed and I will likely be looking at other brands.

“Never buy this product!” 2008-09-23
By Adam Grossman (Brookline, MA USA)
For some reason Black and Decker decided to replace the tried-and-true push button with a timer dial. The dial on our unit never worked well and was hard to control before it broke. Then, at about six months the timer broke entirely and won’t work at all now. Hence, the toaster is totally useless and non-functional. I called for warranty service, but I didn’t have my receipt. The customer service rep told me to look for codes on the unit’s plug that would help her determine the age of the unit, and therefore whether it would still be under warranty. I found the codes, and her immediate response was, “nope, not under warranty, it’s more than a year old.” When I asked how old the unit was, based on the codes I supplied, her response was, “I’m sorry, that information is proprietary and for our use only.”

This is a horrible product design, and no one should buy a unit like it until Black and Decker changes it.

“Worst $30 investment ever…” 2008-02-17
By happy being a mommy (California)
I purchased this toaster oven after seeing it on sale at Target for $29.99. It looked fairly attractive and affordable and since our old B&D toaster oven lasted about 6 yrs, I had faith and took the plunge. Boy, do I wish I had read about this model before making the purchase!

The very first use, the round Toast/Timer knob stuck in place and made an odd buzzing sound… it burnt my toast and never turned off, so I ran across the kitchen and turned the dial off. The second attempt, the timer knob started ticking after turning it (much like your typical egg timer) so I thought we were good to go, for about a minute then the ticking stopped and the knob stuck again and burnt the toast, never shutting off. So, frustrated, I dealt with the sticking on and off for about a week, but it got to the point that it was not only a nuisance but more of a safety issue/fire hazard, so I was ready to pack it back up and return it to the store for an exchange, when I noticed a leaflet inside the instruction booklet that said to call the a toll-free number before returning the product since they might be able to help… so I did. After giving all my info, the customer service rep said that they would send a new unit right out to me. When I got it, I could cut off the broken one’s plug and send it back in with paperwork. I waited about a month for the new unit to arrive. (The whole time I was thinking I could have just taken back the stupid machine to Target that was less than a mile drive down the street from where we live… and I was kicking myself for following B&D’s instructions.) Much to my disappointment, the new one that they sent was faulty too – exactly the same issue. Now I am stuck with two broken units (since they didn’t ask for the first one back to refurb or atleast recycle it.) What a waste of my money and my time!!!

Shame on you B&D for not doing the appropriate product testing before releasing such a faulty piece of equipment to the public.
