A few months ago, he picked up the habit of saying “what”. You call his name, he answers with “what”…which drives me nuts. He can even say it with just a touch of defiance and irritation in his voice to make it very clear that he does not want to be answering you. It’s board line disrespectful (and at times way over the line into disrespectful when he accompanies his “what” with a dirty look…which he’s also recently mastered). We’re working hard on teaching him polite ways to respond when his name is called…..and it’s been a good refresher course for the other kids too. Grifyn: “why?”
WHY! He actually asked why!!!
Now, this is actually a very good thing. We’ve been working with Grifyn on answering questions(most of the time he just says yes any time you ask him anything) and on getting him to initiate questions/requests. So, it was wonderful that he asked a question completely unprompted. It was also great that he asked an appropriate question at the appropriate time in a conversation. . And some how, we have to make him understand that the disrespectful tone and the hateful looks are not appropriate. We’ve been using some cues, modeling and verbal prompts to help make him aware of this. Many times, his facial expression is WAY more disrespectful than his actions or words. When he’s told to do something that he doesn’t want to do, he can shoot daggers with those big brown eyes. His teachers have noticed this at school too. He quickly snaps out of it once he complies with what he’s been told to do. But for that brief moment, I think that I’m very glad that I can’t read his mind…..because I don’t think I want to know what he’s thinking!
