How much chances did Frank Morris, Clarence and John Anglin have to survive their escape from Alcatraz?
I mean do you guys really think they died drowned or that sharks eat them? or that they really survived? this 11 of june it’s going to be 47 years from that escape…

Greetings! The odds of Morris and the Anglin brothers actually making it out to the mainland is very remote. 47 years later, there has still not been a solitary trace of any one of these men. Surely some form of evidence that they are alive would have surfaced by now.

You asked about sharks – it is very rare for sharks to enter the San Francisco Bay, but the guards had fishermen hunt down the biggest they can find (great white sharks frequent Tomales Bay, very close to SF Bay) and put it outside the prison yard. So sharks are very likely not to have consumed them.

The San Francisco Bay does have a strong undertow. It is also very cold water to swim in. Only the heartiest and very well adjusted swimmers (i.e, triathletes) can endure the bay. Most surf around the bay in wetsuits. Without a wetsuit, or some form of thermal protection, you can quickly get hypothermia.

On the night of the escape, there was a very strong undertow that pulled straight from the island, through the Golden Gate Bridge and right out into the ocean. That is several miles of swimming that no one could endure.

What is most likely is they were pulled out to sea and sucked down into an undertow current.

On a few occasions there have been reconstructions done that mimic the exact time, weather, tides, materials, temperature, etc and every one almost always fails, plus coupled with the fact that none were heard from again ever, I’d say the chances were very slim, but I do hope they made it.
