The Bottom Is In. Oh, No It’s Not

The Bottom Is In. The New York Times Magazine missed a chance to finally put in the long-sought market bottom this weekend, spilling not quite 3000 words on academia’s un-Tom Brown, Prof. Nouriel Roubini, but omitting to make it the cover story. By the way, does this remind you of any country sandwiched between, say, Mexico and Canada? On the eve of the crises that befell them, he noticed, most had huge current-account deficits (meaning, basically, that they spent far more than they made), and they typically financed these deficits by borrowing from abroad in ways that exposed them to the national equivalent of bank runs. Most of these countries also had poorly regulated banking systems plagued by excessive borrowing and reckless lending. Corporate governance was often weak, with cronyism in abundance. The goodish news, given Roubini’s description of the post-Bear Stearns rally as nothing more than a “delusional complacency” encouraged by a “bunc...

Can You Spell "Bigot"?

Posted on Aug. 28, 2008 at 5:08 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Can You Spell "Bigot"? An emailer sent me a hilarious snippet from the personal blog of Cato's vice president for international junketeering, hissy fitting, and slandering in which the psychotic one attacks this Web site once again by declaring that "there are no interesting people" in Auburn Alabama. Waaaaaaaa! In addition, says the sick one, there's no "culture" there, either. (He's never been to Auburn, of course). Auburn is one of my favorite spots and yes, there is a culture there, but, admittedly, not one that would be agreeable to the "urbane, cosmopolitan" [T]Reason , magazine crowd, which celebrates the likes of Dennis Rodman, Madonna, Larry Flynt, and a book author who writes about having sex with animals as its cultural icons. D.C. and Hollywood are much more in tune with such cultural depravity.

LETTER: Educational system must change

Posted on Aug. 28, 2008 at 5:07 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Educational system must changeSchool improvements need more than staff support. Change in the city is desired, and things are being done daily to set us on the track for positive change. The selection of Dr. Bonner as the new superintendent of the public school system in the city comes in the same context. Underlying the need for change in New Bedford is a realization that the city will not change unless the educational system changes in order to match the new intelligence needs of the global market. This dynamic interaction between education and economy, if aligned, will bring prosperity to the city and to all of us who live here.Changing the system from one of cronyism and favoritism to one based on a merit system will not come overnight or without pain and collective effort. The most important changes will not come unless agreed upon and worked for collectively. The present culture is embedded in a self-fulfilled prophecy of a population of underachievers. There has been a projecti...

US$1.1B Tiger Woods-designed Dubai golf course plan 'on track'

Posted on Aug. 28, 2008 at 5:06 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

JsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Tiger Woods unveils his ambitious project, touted as the first course in the world designed by the 2008 U.S. Open champion in Dubai. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Tiger Woods is already the world's top-ranked golfer and highest paid athlete. And if all goes according to plan, he'll soon be sporting his biggest trophy yet: a luxury golf course hewn from the sands of the Arabian desert. The ambitious project, touted as the first course in the world designed by the 2008 U.S. Open champion, remains a work in progress on the outskirts of this Middle Eastern boomtown - much like the rapidly growing city itself. But the project's chief said Monday that the first phase of the development, which among other unlikely features promises 5 million square feet of locally grown grass and more than 30,000 full-grown imported trees, is on target for completion sometime in the last three months of 2009."Our schedule is currently on track," Abdu...
