JsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? WASHINGTON (AFP) — Barack Obama's former rival Hillary Clinton on Saturday threw her support behind his vice presidential pick Joseph Biden, even though some of her most ardent supporters remain unhappy with the choice. In a statement released just hours after Obama's campaign announced his running mate, Clinton said Obama "has continued in the best traditions for the vice presidency by selecting an exceptionally strong, experienced leader and devoted public servant."Senator Biden will be a purposeful and dynamic vice president who will help Senator Obama both win the presidency and govern this great country."Obama, 47, confirmed that he had picked Biden, a 65-year-old six-term senator from Delaware, in an early-hours email and text message sent out to millions of supporters. The choice may be more difficult to swallow for Hillary Clinton's most dedicated supporters, especially after news leaked to the press that she had not ev...

• Aug. 24, 2008 - EDITORIAL:Obama Chooses Biden and the Battle for Life is Engaged

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - After the most intense media game of cat and mouse in modern political history. After the Obama campaign managed to keep the suspense alive for well over a week. After promising to be the first campaign in history to make the announcement through the use of text message. The old fashioned leak it to the media game prevailed over high technology in Washington D.C. as speculation evolved into reliable rumors. Finally, around 3 AM, EST, it was confirmed as fact. The Obama campaign scrambled to fulfill their promise to the faithful, and the curious, who had signed up to be a part of political history. The major networks were all following the homes and the travels of the three finalists most of the day. The speculation was running rampant and the news cycle focused on very little else throughout the day. It appeared to this political observer that Fox News zeroed in on Joe Biden first on their Friday evening telecast.Others say it was MSNBC. Soon...

• Aug. 24, 2008 - Obama says he's made his veep choice

JsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama,D-Ill., is welcomed by the crowd as he arrives for a town hall meeting at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Va., Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008. EMPORIA, Va (AP) — Barack Obama said Thursday he's chosen his running mate, but coyly kept all the details to himself as he campaigned with one leading contender and planned a major rally to present the Democratic ticket Saturday in Illinois.Obama refused to say whether he'd notified his pick or when exactly he would send cell phones buzzing with the answer delivered via text message. He seemed to relish the frustrations of scores of reporters following him this week in anticipation of the announcement."Wouldn't you like to know?" he said with a grin when asked by an Associated Press reporter when the text would be sent."I've made the selection, that's all you're gonna get," Obama said as he visited a store selling roasted Virginia ...

• Aug. 24, 2008 - Selection of Biden pleases Goodmann

Mfg. Mfg. Mfg. Retail (Vehicles, Furniture, Electronics, Appliance, Bldg. Retail (Spt. By M.D. U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. Just before midnight Friday, the news started breaking, and the Goodmann house was buzzing with excitement. Sen. Joe Biden, The Associated Press and other major news outlets confirmed, was to be the presumptive vice presidential selection of Barack Obama, the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee. The night was marked by a lot of presumption, ahead of the so-called official text message expected to inform Obama supporters who the VP nominee would be. And Teri Goodmann, a long-time Biden buddy and backer, was getting a flood of text messages. "Not that text message," the Dubuque city official and Democratic activist said, in a laughing nod to the Obama campaign's expected communique. But Goodmann was glowing with the possibilities. After all, she was a Biden foot soldier in his first campaign for president in the late 1980s, and was an ardent supporter ...

• Aug. 24, 2008 - Now's The Time To Start Watching Stargate Atlantis

Nivair H. Now that Stargate SG-1 is retired, Stargate Atlantis needs to be on it's A-game. Stargate Universe is waiting in the wings to steal all the gatey thunder, but I truly believe that this season of Atlantis has been, and will continue to be, the show's best yet. It's your time Atlantis, and here's why. Plus the rest of this week's must-watch TV. Now I'm not saying that I didn't love Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill, but every now and then his constant Andersonisms (or massive pauses before the punchline) killed me. I wanted to scream: Just get to the joke already. It would throw the flow off and shake things, sometimes for the worst. There is a dire lack of hero hair on the boob tube these days. Peter Petrelli from Heroes has a pathetic mane, and it continues to be laughable (even after the recent cut). We need sexy crazy hero hair back. I'm sick of the buzz-cut bad boys, bring back the hair. Sheppard's hair sex appeal far outranks that of any past Stargate crew member, ...

• Aug. 24, 2008 - Biden a necessary antidote

Would he have made this choice a year ago? Six months? Even a few weeks? Joe Biden is Vladimir Putin's contribution to American politics - he is a necessary antidote to the Obama lack of worldly wisdom, which before Georgia was a bit academic to most Americans or amorphous and unfocused as an issue (perhaps they could take a punt, roll the dice as Bill C helpfully put it) but post-Georgia is back at the top of the pile of concerns. McCain did well on Russia - he avoided frightening threats but managed to seem tough and aware. He took the 3AM call. Obama needs a pal who can do the same. But something of the Obama appeal has been diminished by the choice - it is going to be very difficult to rail against Washington insiders with one at his right hand.
